Overview
Morocco, historically home to the indigenous Berber peoples (known as Imazighen), has long been a crossroads of cultures. From early Carthaginian rule to becoming the westernmost province of the Roman Empire, Morocco’s history is marked by migrations, urban settlements, and cultural exchanges. Following the Arab conquest in the 7th century, Morocco became part of the Maghrib region, and Islam became dominant. In the 11th century, the Almoravid dynasty, originating from the Berbers, established a vast empire that stretched from Spain to sub-Saharan Africa. Despite European attempts to colonize, Morocco retained its sovereignty, eventually becoming a French protectorate in 1912. It gained independence in 1956 and remains the only monarchy in North Africa today.
